Mark Fonville, CFP®
President and Wealth Manager
Mark is the President of Covenant Wealth Advisors. Prior to joining the firm, he served as a Regional Director and Vice President for Loring Ward, an investment management firm located in San Jose, CA with over $17 billion in assets. There, Mark advised some of the most experienced financial advisors in the country on how to deliver impactful financial advice to individuals and families.
Additionally, Mark is an accomplished public speaker on investment strategy having spoken at events for the Financial Planning Association, New York Life, Commonwealth Financial, Cambridge Investment Research, amongst others. He also served on Loring Ward’s leadership team.
Mark is a Virginia native. He grew up in Richmond and graduated from Virginia Tech in 2001 with a BS in Finance. He is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ Practitioner and holds a series 66 registration. Mark is also a member of Central Virginia's Financial Planning Association.
Mark and his wife Katherine, have three children and an adorably mischievous dog, Bennett. He enjoys spending time with his family, visiting the Northern Neck of Virginia, and reading a good book. Mark and Katherine attend St. Mary’s Episcopal church in Richmond, VA

Robert C. Smith, MBA, CFP®
Wealth ManagerRobert C. Smith has worked in the financial services industry since 1997. He joined Covenant Wealth Advisors as an associate in 2005. He is a Certified Financial Planner™ and has provided portfolio analysis, financial plans and investment advice for several hundred clients in the Williamsburg, Virginia area. Previously, Rob helped establish a new branch office for Charles Schwab and Co. and was recognized as the top representative for over four years.
Before entering the financial planning and investment business, Rob was with Newport News Shipbuilding for 18 years. He served in a variety of capacities, including nuclear engineering, human resources, finance and marketing. During this period he earned the MBA degree from the College of William and Mary. He was inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma collegiate business honor society in recognition of high scholastic achievement.
Rob earned the BS degree from the U.S. Naval Academy and served five years active duty aboard two ships based in Jacksonville, Florida and Norfolk, Virginia.
He is an active member of the Financial Planning Association (FPA). Rob is also a member of the Williamsburg Community Chapel where he serves as an elder.
Prior to joining Covenant Wealth Advisors, Katherine founded and was president of Fonville Wealth Management. Previously, she worked at Wachovia Securities/Wells Fargo and was responsible for training the firm’s financial advisors on financial planning and retirement planning best practices. She has also consulted high-net-worth families at Bank of America’s Private Client Group.
Katherine resides in Richmond, VA with her husband, Mark, and three children AnneClare (10), Charlotte (8) and Hudson (2). She enjoys a challenging “spin” session at the gym, raising her children, reading, and traveling. Katherine and Mark attend St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.
Katherine is a Virginia native. She grew up in Scottsville and graduated from James Madison University with a BBA in Marketing. Katherine is a member of the Central Virginia Financial Planning Association and has been published in Financial Advisor IQ. She is driven by building deep relationships with her clients, so she can better understand how to help them improve their financial situation and enjoy a wonderful life.
Terri Leonard, FPQP™
Client Services ManagerTerri Leonard is the client services manager and has been with Covenant Wealth Advisors since July of 2011. Ms. Leonard has an A.S. in Business Administration from Thomas Nelson Community College where she was in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She completed the requirements to obtain the Financial Paraplanner Qualified Professional™ designation in 2012.
Terri is a native of Williamsburg and has a beautiful daughter, Layla.
Robert G. Topping, MBA, CFP®
ConsultantRobert G. Topping is an independent consultant for Covenant Wealth Advisors, a firm he founded in 2002. He has been a financial advisor since 1983. From 1985 to 2000 he was principal and owner of an independent financial planning and investment company. From 2000 to 2002, he was a principal with a large national, fee-only planning and investment firm that managed over $2 billion in assets. His area of expertise includes retirement planning, portfolio design and investment management.
Rob has taught personal financial planning at the Golden Gate University Graduate School of Banking and Finance in San Francisco. In addition, he is a volunteer with Crown Ministries, an interdenominational ministry involved with helping people in the area of finances and stewardship. He currently serves as a Deacon at the Williamsburg Community Chapel. He has also been on the board of directors for the Williamsburg Community Foundation where he served as treasurer.
He received his BA from the University of Virginia and his MBA from the College of William & Mary. He received his Certified Financial Planner™ designation in 1983.
Rob is a member of the Past Presidents Advisory Council of the Financial Planning Association of the National Capital Area having served as a past President of the Northern Virginia Society of the Institute of Certified Financial Planners (ICFP). The ICFP is one of two predecessor organizations merged into the Financial Planning Association. He has been listed by Washingtonian Magazine as one of the Experts Who Can Put Your Financial House in Order (based on peer recommendations).
